Strategy Creation overview

On this page

The Strategy Creation widget provides you the ability to create custom, user-defined strategies and submit them to the exchange. User-defined strategies (or structures) are synthetic spread instruments where the legs can be options, futures, or spreads as defined by the exchange where the strategy is submitted.

The exchange validates the user-defined strategy and publishes the strategy definition to all marketplace participants. Users can then obtain a price for it via an RFQ (if needed) or directly place an order on that strategy. Rules for supporting user-defined strategies vary by exchange.

After creating a strategy, you can save it as a template in the Strategy Creation widget. The status of each strategy is listed in the execution report panel, which also provides you with the ability to submit orders using the strategy. The widget also supports modifying the user-defined strategies that you created and saved.

Opening the strategy creation widget

The Strategy Creation widget can be opened as follows:

  • Click Explore in the title bar, select an exchange,
select one or more instruments, then click the Strategy Creation icon in the Widget
    column.
  • Select Strategy Creation from the Widgets menu.
  • In the Market Grid, select one or more contracts, right-click,
select Open… in the context menu and click Strategy Creation. This opens the Strategy Creation
widget seeded with the selected contracts.
  • In the Options Chain, select a spread building option, right-click and click Settings, and set Send
    spreads to:
to Strategy Creation in the Settings: Options Chain menu. This opens the
Strategy Creation widget seeded with the selected contracts.

Using the instrument picker

The instrument picker in the Strategy Creation widget enables you to set each part of a contract separately by clicking a field and selecting a value when defining a strategy leg. For options contracts, you can select Puts and Calls and the price for each. The instrument picker also provides access to the Market Explorer, which can be used to select a contract for the strategy leg.

Covered options strategy creation

Using the Cover button in Strategy Creation, you can quickly add a futures leg to create a covered or hedged options strategy. The corresponding futures leg is added to the strategy with the current price (and Delta for Advanced Options users), both of which can be edited before sending an RFQ.

For a one or more options legs, clicking Cover adds the underlying instrument at LTP with the same symbol, expiry, and current Delta. However, if all legs share the same underlying instrument but have different expiries, the futures leg is added for the nearest-term expiry selected.

Strategy Creation support for opposite direction strategies

When you submit a strategy, the widget checks if your strategy already exists. If your strategy has already been created at the exchange, “Exists” is displayed in the Status column.

If you create the same strategy but with the opposite Buy/Sell direction, the widget displays the existing strategy with a status of “Opposite Exists” in the Status column. The Message column also indicates that the strategy exists but in the opposite direction than what you submitted, and that the existing strategy is actionable and displayed in the widget.

Launching QuikStrike Options Analytics

The Strategy Creation widget provides instant access to the Quikstrike Options Analytics application. Once enabled, you can use the QuikStrike button to open a QuikStrike window containing analytical data for the contracts configured in the Instrument Picker.

You may also launch the QuikStrike application from any of the TT Options widgets. Simply right-click anywhere in the widget and select the Send to QuikStrike option in the context menu.

For an overview of the QuikStrike Options Analytics application, refer to the QuikStrike section.

Note: Refer to the Enabling the Advanced Options Package section in the Setup help for information on enabling access to the QuikStrike Options Analytics application.

Supported exchanges for strategy creation

Using the Strategy Creation widget, you can create and trade user-defined strategies for the following exchanges:

Note: The Strategy Creation widget supports creating custom strategies with common stocks as hedges on markets where TT does not support execution of the stock itself, e.g., ICE_L and Euronext.
